OPAL Data Acquisition System

Data Acquisition System

The Open Platform Advanced Logger — a modern, software-controlled, multi-vendor acquisition system.

Description

The OPAL (Open Platform Advanced Logger) acquisition system is based on a modern electronics design in which software-control techniques have been used to the best advantage. Its design philosophy is unique in two respects: it is built to accommodate multi-vendor tool types, and it is totally software controlled. As standard, OPAL operates ALT standalone and ALT/MSI QuickLink (QL) tools, plus KUSTER and PROBE1 telemetry, and offers 'Scientific Data Systems Inc – Warrior' connector and wiring compatibility. Built on a 19-inch 3U rack chassis, it supports resistivity logging (via a reference-potential electrode and earth stake) and up to eight analog inputs for external sensors.

Features

  • Windows operating system platform
  • Rugged rack-mount chassis, heavy duty and fault-tolerant electronics
  • Easy to use on-screen graphical interface — the Dashboard — with self-diagnostics, configurable through dialog boxes, minimal technical knowledge required
  • Modular design for ease of maintenance
  • Multi-tool-family capability via dedicated tool-specific adapter modules
  • High speed USB connection to the computer
  • Wireline and winch flexibility — runs on coax, mono- or multi-conductor wireline
  • High speed uphole telemetry system and automatic telemetry tuning
  • Shaft encoder flexibility — compatible with any 12V or 5V AB shaft encoder
  • Wireline tension monitoring (compatible with any tension sensor/gauge)
  • Up to 8 analog inputs to collect information from external sensors
  • 'Scientific Data Systems Inc – Warrior' connector/wiring compatibility

  • Upgradeability: User upgradeable firmware
  • Software: LoggerSuite V12.1 or later

LoggerSuite Software

The heart of the graphical user interface is the Dashboard, from which the operator controls all system functions, monitors the acquisition process, and observes tool status. Browser windows provide real-time monitoring with display and printing options for conventional curves, full waveform sonic traces, and acoustic and optical borehole images.

ALT Modem

The ALT modem auto-tunes telemetry on any wireline using the Equalizer and Train processes, offers Analysis and Scope views, and is compatible with ALT, Probe1, and Kuster telemetry protocols with options for other third-party tools.

WellCAD Browser

The WellCAD Browser add-on collects data directly in WellCAD, applies templates, supports real-time annotation, compares against reference/repeat data, runs QA/QC, and enables 3D display and field interpretation.
